Following the successful production of synthetic bone material for medical application from the GranuMas project, they are teaming up again to develop a drug delivery system for bone repair.
For this, Sirim and IIUM are using the antibiotic-incorporated bioceramic 'Apatite Beads'.
Sirim team research leader Dr Fazilah Fazan said the 'Apatite Beads' contained drugs or antibiotics that were needed to treat the disease, and it would be planted into the affected bone of the patient.

Dr Fazilah said the breakthrough would help to reduce the overall costs of treatment and dependence on imported or foreign medical products for bone treatment.

"Finishing a research and coming out with a product is only the first milestone achievement.
"With the help of an agency such as Sirim, the product can be viable and sustainable in the market, and that will be the second milestone achievement," he said in his speech.
