Stockton and a little History:

Stockton-on-Tees is a heavy industrial town which was once devoted to ship-building, a Heavy Chemical Industry and steel working. It is famous for receiving the first passenger steam train, which arrived from Darlington in September 1825. The first rail for the track was laid in 1822, and George Stephenson manned the first trip himself.

By the seventeenth century Stockton was beginning its role as the main port on the River Tees and Stockton also became the main port for North Yorkshire, Westmorland and Durham. Goods exported from Stockton were agricultural that were produced in Durham and Yorkshire.

The River Tees was a busy river in those days. For many years Stockton was the most important settlement in the Teesside area, but in more ancient times Norton and Billingham were places of significance for its agricultural Products,

Norton today is a large suburb of Stockton and called Norton village, which still retains its rural cottages a duck pond and village green. Norton is now a part of the borough of Stockton on Tees.

Also part of the borough of Stockton on Tees is Billingham; to the north east of Norton and is a modern town, best known for the huge petro chemical works of ICI And during World War II the production of synthetic ammonia at Billingham for explosives was in big demand.

Also Billingham became heavily involved in the production of high performance aviation fuel. And production of plastics established in 1934 became was very important at Billingham during the war and was used in the construction of aircraft cockpits.

Other work relating to the Second World War included secret work carried out in relation to the development of atomic bombs.

Stockton-on-Tees is a changing town now, and offers a total different culture to them old days, the people are a fantastic bunch, and we at citylocal Stockton will give you more history and news in our next blog.

This new facility will enable the charity to extend the vital range of services which is freely provided to children and adults at such a critical time in their lives.

The new accommodation will provide specialist therapy and counselling rooms for patients and their families.

In addition the Centre will be a resource of best practice and expertise to the wider community including other healthcare providers.
